Tomorrow Never Knows

Artik was standing on a platform much like the Grand Senatorium, a slab of gilded marble, about a mile wide and about five meters long. He was gazing over the mahogany railing into the expanse of space. Being a Solar Saiyan, he could easily exist on this marble viewing platform with no atmosphere, in the middle of space. What he was looking at was a black, somehow glowing, vertical rift. Huge, the size of a thousand suns. It was not open, this was the scar of an open wound. Through it, the foreign bodies of the Cosmic Saiyans poured out and began creating things. Races, people, animals. Trees, planets, stars. Water, oxygen, Cheetos. He sighed audibly.

A dead squirrel dropped onto the marble platform, shortly followed by a loud curse. "STOP. DROPPING. DEAD. ANIMALS." Cyril scolded his ship and stopped short. "Why is there a marble... Artik! Hello there."

Artik smiled grimly and waved, "Hello, Cyril. Welcome to the Amplitudo Observatione Nunc UNIVERSI."

Cyril walked forward and stood beside Artik. He observed the large rift. "This must have been quite the sight when it was active." Cyril had seen his share of rifts but none of this magnitude.

Makoto had been there the whole time silently. He looked at the rift. It seemed familiar to him...Erreily familiar. "Why are we here?"

Artik raised an eyebrow, "Hmm? It was to my understandingthat your people caused this," he gestured outwards. He then silently greeted Makoto.

"Wha- OH!" Cyril began laughing, "Ohhh yeah I.. I remember. That was an awful day." Cyril scratched his head, "And completely not my fault. I told them that their energy converters were way to complicated and doomed to fail but no. Stubborn lot, that research team." Cyril fondly recalled the mayhem created that day. "Of course no one expected the inadvertent start of a new universe."

Makoto nodded and walked over, observing the rift. "So there was an energy overload from the converters that looped in on itself and created a small big bang like event that is now creating a new universe inside of our own?"

Artik shook his head, "Nope. Cyril's band of angels... sort of... created our Universe. And opened this transdimensional rift. The Cosmic Saiyans of old came through, and here we are."

"Where did they come from then?" Cyril wondered aloud.

Makoto crossed his arms. "If I remember correctly they are from a universe that was at the end of it's lifespan. When the rift opened they crossed over into here."

Artik shrugged, not remembering his earlyish life.

Cyril rubbed his chin in deep thought. If the rift was between his universe and this one then it would stand to reason the Cosmic Saiyans came from his own universe. But, that couldn't be. Cyril knew every race in his previous dimension and the Cosmic Saiyans were not one of them. But of course the name was nothing to go by, it was most likely changed as it was handed down by word of mouth for however long it had been. "Weird." Cyril remarked.

Makoto nodded as he looked at the rift. "We have to close it you know. We can't have the universes mixing like this. At this rate the rift will continue to grow bigger and bigger until the two universes collide completely, destroying all existence in both universes."

Artik sighed, "See how we aren't collapsing on ourselves from the gravity? It's a closed wound. A scar." He pointed to the center, "Open rifts don't typically glow so.. unremarkably. Hey," Artik stared blankly at Makoto, "How are you able to," Artik slapped himself, "Right. Full-blooded Saiyans with tails. What about you, Cyril? We're in open space. The only way we're able to talk is... umm... the air particles our lungs carried? The TARDIS? Something..."

"Besides there is nothing on the other side any more Makoto," Cyril reminded him, just a tad bitterly. "I don't require air. I am a being of pure energy who is simply maintaining a physical facade which allows me to interact with this universe."

Makoto looked at Artik. "We have a rift in space and time and you are questioning things that seem normal? Dumbass."

Artik repeated, through gritted teeth, "It... is closed. It's been closed for billions of years."

Cyril squinted in thought, "Has it been more than a billion years already? Wow."

Makoto rolled his eyes. "If it was closed then we wouldn't be here right now. It is still here. It is just not active. It still has the power to warp reality."

Artik sighed, "You're seeing an echo. The Cosmics wanted to make this place a landmark. Hence the Amplitudo Observatione Nunc UNIVERSI. No power. No effects.."

Makoto crossed his arms. "Even an echo leaves imprints Artik."

"There is literally nothing on the other side anymore. It's simply a scar, a landmark, a.. a big flashy point on a map." Cyril gestured to the light around the rift, "Look at the light it emits, it can't possibly be emitting that by itself, just smell it." Cyril was moving his hands around to make a point but he floundered for a moment as he realized Saiyans didn't have that acute a sense of smell. "Uh... er.. ki sense. Just reach out to it. It's a fancy paint job."

Makoto looked between them. "Okay then...why?....just why? Why do we need to keep this around? It serves no purpose. It is just confusing."

Artik sighed, "Listen to the Transdimensional beings, Makoto," Artik had an acute sense of smell. "The Cosmic Saiyans would gather, all life would gather, here. Hand in hand, singing, thanking the rift for the birth of this universe. From this, we get New Year's Day."
